Heads up! There is a new organization that transports rescue animals in private planes - Lucky Dog Rescue Flights [www.LuckyDogRescueFlights.org].
From their website:
Lucky Dog Rescue Flights has rescued over 300 dogs that would otherwise have been killed… We deliver animals to their new families, to foster families, and to adoption centers… Although trips can exceed 500 miles one-way and fuel cost exceeds $1000, there is never a fee of any kind, either to an individual, family or organization.
This is a new not-for-profit organization. They expect to have their 501©(3) status in the summer of 2011, after which they will solicit corporate/foundation sponsorships. They're ramping up quickly -- I understand they have 16 pilots already, but mostly in the Midwest. They are actively recruiting pilots on the West coast now so they can extend their service across the country. Just think what that will mean to shelters!
ABC TV accompanied Lucky Dog Rescue Flights on an animal rescue flight and featured them on a Chicago-based show called 190 North. Watch their 3-min segment to meet the founders.
